We believe in exploiting anything we can if it gives us a clue into buck
movement. Years ago I had a long conversation with outdoor writer Jeff
Murray who had just written a new book titled "Moonstruck", Jeff was one
of the most informative writers of the moon at the time. Since education
is the key to success I listened very close and was determined to add this
information to our hunting knowledge. We found a direct correlation of deer
movement patterns to the Overhead and Underfoot positions of the moon, rather
than the moon phases, and when we added deer attractant scent during these moon
positions our success ratio skyrocketed. If you decide to hunt by
moon phases here is the unwritten rule. Three days before the 1st
quarter usually favors morning hunts, 7 day period of last quarter
favors evening hunts. New moon favors all day hunts and a full moon
favors mid day hunts. But who bothers with the moon when the rut is on, which is
soon to happen ? Most of us hunt the whole day anyhow. The bottom line is this,
barometric pressure changes and temperature changes during a cold front
account for more predictable deer movement rather than moon phases.
The vast majority of our successful hunts for big bucks were brought about by
utilizing buck attractant scents and mock scrapes. Of course we used many other
lesser tactics that helped round out our success ratio. We have just produced
two of the hottest scents in the industry (Desire and Smart Scrape) for this exact time frame of the pre-rut and rut.
Like my son Greg likes to say, "If you throw enough lines in the water, you're bound to catch a fish". Good luck, and don't forget to send us your success pictures.
