Now is the time to start your mock scrapes. There is no hunting tactic more deadly than mock scrapes. Consider this, mock scrapes and real scrapes are simply a form of communication between deer, but to a smart deer hunter there is no other sign in the woods that gives up so much information. These scrapes are absolutely the only means a hunter has in which to communicate with the local bucks. Start out by making up to 10 small scrapes near food sources, deer runs and trails leading toward bedding areas, if known. Here is a home made buck attractant to start with. 1 cup ammonia, 1 cup kosher salt and 1/4 cup husk fiber (found in the pharmacy of Walmart), mix in a gallon jug and fill with water. You should see expansion within one week, ignore other scrapes that show no sign of use. Freshen up the expanded scrape and choose the one showing the most activity and set up your camera. Remember, you are attracting bucks purely out of curiosity. The number one mistake the vast majority of hunters make is by using the same scent over and over through out the season. Switch up your scents each time you freshen the scrape, especially if you’re after a certain buck, you must keep him interested and curious.
GOOD LUCK!
